Writer: Marithza RossMarithza Ross

Why Does It Matter?

This initiative demonstrates how nature-based solutions can protect the county’s natural assets from climate challenges like sea level rise, storms, and flooding, setting a model for future resilient infrastructure.

How Did They Win?

The Alpine Groves Park Shoreline Restoration Project successfully stabilized the shoreline using a rock revetment and native plants, protecting the wetlands ecosystem from erosion and rising water levels.

What Does It Have to Do with Me?

The project ensures long-term environmental benefits and preserves Alpine Groves Park for future generations. If you’ve visited Alpine Groves, you know it spans 54.5 acres in Northwest St. Johns County between the St. Johns River and the William Bartram Scenic & Historic Highway. The park offers unique features for visitors of all ages, including recreational activities, three distinct Florida habitats, and historic structures.

Convenient picnic tables are located near the parking lots, along with an orange grove-themed playground, a fishing pier on the St. Johns River, restrooms, and an outdoor pavilion. Hiking and exercise enthusiasts will enjoy the one-mile paved, handicap- and stroller-accessible hiking trail that traverses three distinct Florida habitats.
