Shout out to St. Augustine Youth Services (SAYS) for inspiring this post!

Today is Behavioral Health Day! The Florida Behavioral Health Association, alongside mental health and substance use disorder advocates from across the state, gathered at the Florida Capitol to discuss the future of behavioral health in Florida.

Here in St. Augustine, the SAYS team took a step literally for mental and physical wellness. In support of Behavioral Health Day, they joined advocates statewide in a walk to promote mental health awareness. Together, they’re empowering minds and transforming lives. Learn More.

The Mental Health Benefits of Walking

Did you know! Walking is one of the simplest ways to boost mental well-being. Studies show that just 30 minutes of walking per day can:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

  • Improve mood and cognitive function

  • Increase energy levels

  • Promote better sleep

Walk With a Community

Walking is even better when you do it with others. St. Johns County Parks & Rec offers several programs that bring people together for fitness, and community.

Sole Striders is a welcoming fitness walking group for all levels. Participants meet at Solomon Calhoun Center and walk one mile or more as a group, adjusting the distance based on the members comfort level. Its a great way to stay active, socialize, and work toward a healthier lifestyle.

St. Johns County Parks and Recreation has partnered with St. Johns Regional Audubon to offer guided bird walks in local parks and natural areas. These walks are perfect for families looking to connect with nature while learning about local bird species. Whether you are new to birding or already have some experience, this educational and fun activity is a great way to explore the outdoors together.

SJC Parks & Rec and the SJC Pet Center host group hikes where participants learn about nature while walking alongside adoptable dogs. This program offers fresh air, exercise, and a chance to meet a potential new best friend.
