Following the MLK holiday on Monday, we’re recapping our recent events and highlighting how foundations like ours make so much more possible.

The Parks and Recreation Department hosted its annual MLK Breakfast and Basketball Tournament in Hastings. The breakfast has been a cherished tradition for over 20 years, while the basketball tournament is just shy of that two-decade milestone. The Foundation was honored to be part of these events, celebrating the Recreation Department’s lasting impact on our community.

On MLK Day, we also showcased our involvement with the historic MLK House project, which exemplifies the vital role nonprofit 501(c)(3) foundations like ours play in supporting community parks and programs. The relocation of this historic house was made possible through state funding that the Foundation helped secure. Our board members dedicated countless hours to navigating the paperwork and meeting crucial deadlines to bring this project to fruition.

Park foundations like ours do much more than fundraise—they provide vital support to their parks through services such as mobilizing volunteers, securing grants, advocating for community needs, supporting county parks and recreation programs, and creating a partnership bridge between the private and public sectors. These initiatives ensure that parks remain recognized as vital community assets, while also fostering stronger community ties and establishing a positive reputation for quality parks and programs throughout our county.

The Canright House now stands proudly at Collier-Blocker-Puryear Park in West Augustine, a community treasure featuring a playscape, pavilion, tennis courts, and a picturesque lawn shaded by beautiful, mature trees.

We extend our gratitude to all those contributing to the development of a recreation community. Our foundation is committed to supporting every facet of recreation in St. Johns County.
