Understanding the SJC Recreation Advisory Board: What It Does and the Time Commitment

Updated: Nov 9

As a former Recreation Advisory Board member, one of the most common questions I hear is about the time commitment. But before diving into that, let's explore the role and purpose of the RAB. The Recreation Advisory Board was established by the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners on January 9, 1990, and is comprised of seven members who serve four-year terms. The board aims to ensure that each district in the county is represented, contributing to balanced and diverse perspectives.

So, What Exactly Does the RAB Do?

The board serves as a valuable volunteer advisory group for the Parks and Recreation Department. Members bring forward new ideas, help solve issues that arise, and liaise with other governmental bodies when needed. RAB members represent the department’s stance on public matters, assist in setting and achieving goals, and help develop budgets that enhance the community’s access to recreation programs and facilities. Essentially, the RAB works to ensure that our community’s recreational resources continue to grow and thrive.

The Time Commitment

For those considering joining the board, here’s what you can expect in terms of time. The RAB meets once a month, on the second Wednesday, at 1:30 p.m. at the County Health Department building. Members are also expected to be responsive to emails to stay updated on relevant topics and discussions between meetings. Additionally, members are required to abide by the board’s bylaws and reside within the county.

If you’re interested in the board's work but can’t commit to joining, you’re always welcome to attend the RAB meetings. Community members can listen in or share comments, concerns, or compliments during the designated public comment section.
