The Field of Dreams at Aberdeen Park: More Than a Park—A Place Everyone Should Know

When we think about parks and recreation, we often focus on the visible outcomes—upgraded turf, well-marked fields, and accessible play areas. But every now and then, someone comes along who reminds us why we’re really here.
That someone, in this case, is George Vancore—the co-founder and head umpire at the Field of Dreams Baseball League. After the groundbreaking ceremony for the park’s upcoming expansion, I had the chance to sit down with George. And what he shared wasn’t just about baseball. It was about belonging.
For those who don’t know, the Field of Dreams is a fully inclusive, ADA-certified baseball field located in Aberdeen Park, in St. Johns County. It’s home to a volunteer-run league where kids of all abilities can wear a uniform, hear their names announced, sing the National Anthem, and be part of a team—often for the very first time.

And now, thanks to a $1.5 million investment by St. Johns County, this space is about to grow. The County's Parks & Recreation project includes expanded parking and a brand-new concession building with ADA-accessible restrooms. It’s a big win for a park that already means so much to so many.

But George reminded me that this isn’t just about amenities—it’s about people.
The Field of Dreams isn’t just a park. It’s a promise—to kids, to families, to a community that believes everyone deserves a chance to play, to belong, and to shine.
And this expansion? It’s just the beginning.
