In today’s digital age, connecting with others has never been easier—especially when it comes to shared interests like cycling. I reached out to the Nocatee Cycling Social Group, a unique, virtually-driven community for cyclists in St. Johns County, that takes the best of online connection and turns it into real-world recreation.
After relocating to Florida in 2012, Mr. Wallace did what many of us do nowadays: he Googled cycling clubs in the Ponte Vedra area. He found three main options: the North Florida Bicycle Club, VeloBrew, and Beaches Velo Cycling Club. This sparked the creation of a Facebook group aimed at bringing local cyclists together.
There’s no pressure, just the flexibility to engage when you can. It’s not a traditional cycling club with rigid schedules or strict commitments. Instead, it’s a virtual space where cyclists can connect, plan impromptu rides, and share recommendations for local routes.
Mr. Wallace mentioned some of his favorite local spots for cycling, including Nocatee, Veteran’s Park, and Ancient City Brewing. Key features they appreciate in a location are ample parking, bathrooms, water fountains, and bike lanes—things that make a cycling experience comfortable and convenient.
While the group thrives online—through posts, shares, and messages—the wheels get turning outside, on the open roads of St. Johns County. Whether you’re looking for someone to join you on a leisurely ride to the beach or seeking suggestions for a weekend ride, this social group is the perfect place to reach out to like-minded neighbors. As Mr. Wallace puts it: “Don’t be shy!”
So, why not meet online and ride outside? The Nocatee Cycling Social Group is waiting for you to join the ride—whenever you're ready!
If you’re part of a group or an individual who created a group—or if you joined one that you connected with and it somehow changed your life—we want to hear about it. Email me at mross@sjcpf.org.
