Ever Heard of Disc Golf? Meet the St. Augustine Club Bringing This Fun, Fresh Sport to Life!

When I first heard about the St. Augustine Disc Golf Club, I was curious about what inspired its formation and the vision that fuels its growth. Talking to club member Bill Bowen, I quickly learned that it all started in 2020 when a group of dedicated local disc golfers decided to take their passion to the next level. Their initial focus was to maintain and improve the Moccasin Creek Disc Golf Course at the St. Johns County Fairgrounds. In 2021, the club became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, gaining a larger purpose. They’re now dedicated to educating others about disc golf, creating organized play opportunities, raising awareness in the community, developing courses, and building a strong partnership with local parks departments. They’re on a mission to bring disc golf to new heights in St. Johns County.

Bill’s an ace community leader on the SJC Rec. Advisory Board—and word is, his disc golf game isn’t too shabby either!

As I learned more about the club’s home courses, it became clear how much they enjoy St. Johns County’s parks. The Moccasin Creek Disc Golf Course, with its 26 holes at the fairgrounds, is their pride and joy, but they also appreciate the 9-hole course at Aragon Park in St. Augustine Shores and another 9-hole course at FCC on CR 210. One thing I heard repeatedly was the club’s hope to see more courses developed, especially in northern parts of the county, to make the sport accessible to even more people.

The St. Augustine Disc Golf Club is about more than just the game—it’s about community. It was wonderful to hear how disc golf brings together people of all ages, genders, and professions. Club members include welders, lawyers, landscapers, and pharmacists, all united by their love for disc golf. In addition to regular games, the club supports local charities and organizes veterans' clinics throughout the year. It’s clear that the connections they form extend beyond the course, fostering a true sense of camaraderie and purpose.

Some have even spotted Sasquatch checking out the disc golf course!

One of their standout events this year was joining forces with the Shriners BBQ at the fairgrounds. Club members shared how rewarding it was to support the Shriners Children's Hospital through this fundraiser, making it a memorable highlight for everyone involved.

For those interested in getting involved, joining the St. Augustine Disc Golf Club couldn’t be easier. They encourage anyone curious about disc golf to join their Facebook group, STADGC, where updates on events and activities are shared. The club meets most Saturdays at 9 AM for league play at the fairgrounds, and they welcome newcomers. No experience? No problem—they’ll even help get you started with a couple of discs and a quick lesson. Volunteers are also welcome to pitch in with course maintenance and other improvements.

Whether you’re a seasoned player or brand new to disc golf, this community has a place for everyone. Be sure to tag the club and us in your disc golf experiences so we can share your stories and keep our rec. community connected. It’s been a pleasure to learn more about this passionate group, and I can’t wait to see them on the course!
